Intravenous Therapy: a modern therapy for our busy lives
by Dr. David Richmond, ND
The digestive tract is, and has always been, the way we should receive our daily nutrients. But what happens when your body is depleted, stress is constant, you have malabsorption due to GI issues and your food quality is less than stellar? My analogy for patients is that getting healthy is like swimming upstream. You may be on the right path, but if the current is too strong, you’ll never reach your goal. This concept applies to all facets of health, but it is especially true when it comes to the use of Intravenous (IV) Therapy.
What is IV Therapy?
Intravenous (IV) means directly into the veins. With Naturopathic Medicine, this approach is used to introduce doses of nutrients at a therapeutic level directly into the bloodstream, thereby skipping the digestive tract absorption issues. It allows patients to reach doses of vitamins, minerals and amino acids that would be difficult or impossible to reach through diet alone. The purpose of this high dose is to create a higher concentration in the bloodstream, which then creates a concentration gradient pushing more of the nutrients into the cells and tissues.
What is used in IV Therapy?
Naturopathic Medicine commonly uses formulas that include calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, trace elements, B vitamins, and Vitamin C. Other items may be added to the formulas (or cocktails) depending on the situation. Example mixes would include:
Myers’ Cocktail – fatigue, depression, fibromyalgia, mental clarity, hormonal imbalances.
Plaquex (Phosphotidycholine) – hardening of the arteries, peripheral arterial disease.
Chelation (Calcium Disodium EDTA) – removal of heavy metal toxicity for immune, neurological or inflammatory conditions.
Immune Support – higher doses of Vitamin C and nutrients to stimulate the system to treat chronic illness or repeated infections. Often combined with Ozone therapy.
Athlete Support – higher doses of antioxidants, minerals and amino acids to prepare for intense exercise or to enhance recovery.
High Dose IV Vitamin C – increasing doses of Vitamin C, up towards 70grams, in order to support immune response and create a localized chemotherapeutic response in several forms of cancer. Best results are seen with lymphomas, lung NSCLC, cholangiocarcinoma, breast, kidney and bladder cancers.
