What is SIBO and do you have it?

What is SIBO?

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is a condition in which bacteria grow and overpopulate the Small Intestine, and has been shown to be the #1 cause of IBS.

The main function of the small intestine is to digest and absorb nutrients. As a result, it is designed to contained lower levels of bacteria versus the large intestine.  One of the most common root causes of SIBO is impairment of the migrating motility complex (MMC), which causes impaired gut motility, and accumulation of bacteria in the small intestine. Common symptoms include:

  • Diarrhea and/or Constipation
  • Bloating
  • Flatulence and/or Burping
  • Heartburn
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal Pain and Cramping

Doctor Kawai and Doctor Vojtisek have taken a special interest in this condition. Most often testing is suggested to identify the type of SIBO present, followed by (usually several rounds of) treatment, and maintenance.

If the above symptoms match yours, please book an appointment with Dr. Kawai or Dr. Vojtisek to begin treatment.
